This workshop will explore how media literacy is an integral part of being literate in today’s world. We will be looking at ways to integrate media literacy in the curriculum, helping students, parents and teachers become critical thinkers and mindful consumers of traditional and new media. The workshop will offer practical activities and teaching strategies for media literacy at different grade-levels.

Objectives

Through this workshop, participants will:

  • understand the importance of media literacy
  • become aware of physiological and psychological power that media has on the brain
  • identify the hidden messages in the media and the tools of persuasion that the media uses
  • realise the need to be critical viewers and thinkers themselves
  • explore ways to develop the habit of inquiry and critical thinking in children about the messages they receive and create

Workshop Leader

Ms. Shahrezad Samiuddin works at TRC. She is also a journalist with a special interest in traditional and new media. She has written features pieces in Dawn on various issues, including on the media. For almost a decade, Shahrezad has been writing the Auntie Agni column in Dawn. She writes on a variety of subjects for Aurora, the Express Tribune, The Herald (Dawn group) and The Indian Express. She has also co-authored a book on Pakistan for young readers called, Pakistan: Castle with a Thousand Doors.
