Reading comprehension is the ability of a reader to extract and construct meaning by engaging actively with written language to derive the intended purpose of the author. It is important to teach active reading strategies, through explicit instruction, throughout the elementary and middle school years to develop independent readers. The aim of this workshop is to give young readers the tools they need to understand increasingly complex text throughout their academic career and beyond.

Objectives

Through this workshop, participants will:

  • understand the obstacles that cause a break down in comprehending text
  • become aware of strategies that promote readers’ reading skills to aid comprehension
  • identify research-based instructional techniques to teach comprehension

Workshop Leader

Ms. Uzma Shabbir brings with her an experience of 20 years in teaching English Language and Literature at the secondary level. In addition to that, she has also worked in Curriculum Development and Teacher Training and Support in the capacity of an Academic Coordinator. She is currently teaching English Literature to O Level students at Haque Academy.
