This workshop will focus on ways to implement a variety of checks for understanding and use data from formative assessments to evaluate and track objective mastery. Participants will practice creating formative assessments and be provided a toolkit of types of formative assessments and checks for understanding from a variety of different content areas.

Objectives

Through this workshop, participants will:

  • understand the goals of formative assessments and the importance of maintaining checks for understanding
  • share current practices in schools in carrying out formative assessment
  • evaluate given samples of checking practices in formative assessment and modify as appropriate for their classroom practice
  • become aware of ways to use formative assessments effectively in the classroom.

Mrs. Amanda Rawlings has an Honors BA degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, USA, where she studied Biology and Studio Art. She is currently the High School Principal at YES Prep East End, a low-income charter school in Houston, Texas. She has experience as a Biology instructor and Grade Level Manager and has training in teacher evaluations as High School Principal. She has been awarded the Kinder Excellence in Teaching Award for her work at YES Prep.
